As a pediatric OT, I'm always looking for simple ways to help kids feel more calm and focused. One area that might surprise you is how much the mouth can play a role! Activities that involve some good chewing, consistent sucking, and even blowing can be super helpful for self-regulation. Think about how some kids just love to chew on things – that deep pressure from their jaw muscles actually sends calming signals all through their bodies. It's why things like rubber chewies or even just chewing on a flexible straw can be so comforting for them.
Besides chewing, the act of sucking can also be really soothing. For little ones, a bottle or pacifier often does the trick. But even for older kids, slowly sipping on something warm like tea or broth can be really calming – it's the warmth plus that steady sucking rhythm. And you know how much kids love milkshakes and smoothies? Sucking those thick drinks through a straw actually gives their mouth muscles a good workout that can be surprisingly calming and organizing for their nervous system.
Don't forget about the power of breath! Activities that get kids blowing, like making bubbles, whistling, or playing a harmonica, encourage those nice deep breaths that naturally help everyone calm down. Offering crunchy and chewy snacks throughout the day, like raw veggies or dried fruit, isn't just healthy – it also gives their jaw muscles that regulating workout they need.
Just a little heads-up: always keep safety in mind! Think about your child's age and what they can handle without choking. Definitely keep an eye on the younger ones or kids who have any challenges with their mouths. By thinking about these simple mouth activities, you can give your child another great way to find their calm, focus better, and just navigate their day with a little more ease.
