The Soothing Power of Touch: Simple Tactile Activities for Calmer Kids

ree

As a pediatric occupational therapist with years (decades) of experience, I talk about the power of touch and how it can be a fantastic tool for helping kids feel calm and regulated throughout their busy day, and even as they wind down for sleep. Think about how comforting a hug can feel, or how satisfying it is to squish playdough – that's the magic of tactile input at work! When we offer the right kinds of touch experiences, we can really support our children's ability to manage their emotions and settle their bodies.

When I talk about calming touch, it's not just about any kind of touch. I’m looking at activities that provide  "tactile" input through joint compression and heavy resistance, as well as slow, consistent touch. Think about the feeling of being wrapped snugly in a blanket, the deep pressure of a gentle squeeze, or even the resistance they feel when pushing against a wall. These kinds of tactile experiences send calming signals to their nervous systems, helping them feel more grounded and secure.

There are many simple ways to incorporate calming tactile activities into your child's day. Playing with playdough – squishing, rolling, and cutting – provides great hand resistance. Sensory bins filled with dry beans or rice offer a wonderful way for them to explore different textures. Even something as simple as giving a firm, loving hug or letting them lie nestled between soft couch cushions can provide that deep pressure they might be seeking. For some kids, fidget toys with different textures can be a helpful way to keep their hands busy in a calming way during quiet times.

By intentionally including these kinds of tactile experiences in your daily routines, you can offer your child powerful tools for self-regulation. A few minutes of playing with clay or even taking a warm bath after a stimulating activity can help them transition to a calmer state. A "hand hug" or a snuggle in a favorite blanket can be just what they need when feeling overwhelmed. These tactile activities can be incredibly grounding and can contribute to a greater sense of calm throughout the day, which can ultimately lead to a more peaceful and restful night for everyone. It’s amazing how the sense of touch can be such a powerful pathway to calm!
